Chapter Fourteen

Juliette

The wedding and reception was exhausting. I was thankful when it was over. Now we’re back at the house, and Luca is back in the gym while I relax in a nice hot bath.

I close my eyes and lean my head back against the back of the tub and just breathe. The day was long, and I’m tired. I saw the look on my father’s face, and it makes me wonder what he’s thinking. He didn’t look happy about the wedding, and he didn’t even speak to me once at the reception. I thought about asking Luca about it, but I didn’t want to bother him. I can’t get the thought out of my head, and I know he’s up to something. Maybe I will ask Luca later what he thinks. For now, I just want to relax and take a bath.

When I’m finished, I climb out and dry and dress in my shorts and tank top before heading for the living room. I sit on the couch and flip on the TV, but there’s nothing of interest to watch. So I do what I’ve been doing and walk to the basement steps, move to the bottom step and sit. It’s time to watch Luca work out.

His muscles flex and contract, and they call to me. I don’t know why considering he doesn’t even like me. He’s made that clear more than once, but then the way he kissed me today made me rethink it all. Maybe he does care at least a little.

“What do you want?” he asks, not even looking at me.

“I need to talk to you.”

“About what?”

“Why my father wasn’t happy with us today,” I tell him. He stops jumping the rope before turning to look at me.

“You noticed that too?”

“He was angry. I know my father, and he was angry.”

“Wasn’t this whole thing their idea?” Luca asks as I shrug. I don’t know. How would I know? I was never privy to that kind of information.

“I don’t know. I assumed so with the merger and all.”

“But you’re right. He was pissed. My father looked … smug.”

“You think he set this up?”

“I don’t know. I don’t see why he would. Your father set up the fight. He had to know I had a chance of winning.”

“He didn’t plan on you winning. He planned on Dino killing you.” It’s the first time I’ve said this to him. He cocks his head and stares at me before shaking his head.

“He did?”

“Yes. He planned on handing me over to Dino.” He doesn’t miss the shudder that runs through me either. His head tilts to the side before he walks toward me.

“You were afraid of him. Why?”

“Are we sharing experiences now?” I ask him. His smirk is sexy as hell, and he knows it.

“I’m asking you a question. Why were you afraid of Dino?”

“He raped me.”

“He did what?” he growls.

“He raped me multiple times. I was just a toy to him. So in the grand scheme of things, I’m glad he didn’t win.
