Chapter Fourteen
Juliette
The wedding and reception was exhausting. I was thankful when it was over. Now weâre back at the house, and Luca is back in the gym while I relax in a nice hot bath.
I close my eyes and lean my head back against the back of the tub and just breathe. The day was long, and Iâm tired. I saw the look on my fatherâs face, and it makes me wonder what heâs thinking. He didnât look happy about the wedding, and he didnât even speak to me once at the reception. I thought about asking Luca about it, but I didnât want to bother him. I canât get the thought out of my head, and I know heâs up to something. Maybe I will ask Luca later what he thinks. For now, I just want to relax and take a bath.
When Iâm finished, I climb out and dry and dress in my shorts and tank top before heading for the living room. I sit on the couch and flip on the TV, but thereâs nothing of interest to watch. So I do what Iâve been doing and walk to the basement steps, move to the bottom step and sit. Itâs time to watch Luca work out.
His muscles flex and contract, and they call to me. I donât know why considering he doesnât even like me. Heâs made that clear more than once, but then the way he kissed me today made me rethink it all. Maybe he does care at least a little.
âWhat do you want?â he asks, not even looking at me.
âI need to talk to you.â
âAbout what?â
âWhy my father wasnât happy with us today,â I tell him. He stops jumping the rope before turning to look at me.
âYou noticed that too?â
âHe was angry. I know my father, and he was angry.â
âWasnât this whole thing their idea?â Luca asks as I shrug. I donât know. How would I know? I was never privy to that kind of information.
âI donât know. I assumed so with the merger and all.â
âBut youâre right. He was pissed. My father looked ⦠smug.â
âYou think he set this up?â
âI donât know. I donât see why he would. Your father set up the fight. He had to know I had a chance of winning.â
âHe didnât plan on you winning. He planned on Dino killing you.â Itâs the first time Iâve said this to him. He cocks his head and stares at me before shaking his head.
âHe did?â
âYes. He planned on handing me over to Dino.â He doesnât miss the shudder that runs through me either. His head tilts to the side before he walks toward me.
âYou were afraid of him. Why?â
âAre we sharing experiences now?â I ask him. His smirk is sexy as hell, and he knows it.
âIâm asking you a question. Why were you afraid of Dino?â
âHe raped me.â
âHe did what?â he growls.
âHe raped me multiple times. I was just a toy to him. So in the grand scheme of things, Iâm glad he didnât win.
